The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) has expressed heartfelt closeness and prayerful solidarity with Pope Leo XIV as he prepares for forthcoming surgery, assuring the Holy Father of the continent’s fervent prayers and spiritual communion during this delicate period.
Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, Archbishop of Kinshasa and President of SECAM, released the message on behalf of African and Madagascan bishops and the entire People of God throughout Africa and its islands, acknowledging widespread concern among the faithful while affirming trust in God’s providence.
Cardinal Ambongo assured the Holy Father of Africa’s “filial affection and constant prayers.” The message emphasizes that the Church across Africa remains united with Pope Leo XIV during this health challenge.
“Your Holiness, please be assured of the filial affection and constant prayers of the Church in Africa,” Cardinal Ambongo stated, expressing deep spiritual connection between African Catholics and the Pope.
The SECAM president entrusted Pope Leo XIV to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, praying that Mary “accompany You through the operation and recovery, and obtain for You renewed strength, good health, and a full and speedy recovery.”
The invocation of Marian intercession reflects Catholic tradition of seeking the Virgin Mary’s protection and healing grace during health crises, particularly for the Pope as successor of Peter and head of the universal Church.
Cardinal Ambongo invited all bishops, priests, consecrated persons, and lay faithful throughout Africa and its islands to unite in fervent prayer for the Holy Father. The appeal calls for Eucharistic celebrations, personal prayers, and ecclesial community gatherings to express communion with Pope Leo XIV.
“May our Eucharistic celebrations, personal prayers, and ecclesial communities express our communion with You,” Cardinal Ambongo wrote, mobilizing spiritual resources across the African continent in support of the pontiff.
The SECAM president positioned the Holy Father’s health challenge as occasion for spiritual renewal and recommitment to prayer for the Pope’s ministry. “May this moment renew the Church in Africa in its love for the Successor of Peter and its commitment to pray for Your ministry,” he stated.
The message acknowledges that news of the Pope’s forthcoming surgery has caused concern among African Catholics. “The news has naturally caused concern among the faithful across our continent,” Cardinal Ambongo noted, recognizing the emotional impact of papal health issues on church communities.
Yet the message emphasizes trust in divine providence and confidence in the Pope’s resilience, suggesting that African bishops approach the situation with both realistic awareness of medical seriousness and spiritual confidence in God’s care.
The organized, coordinated response from SECAM demonstrates the African Church’s institutional commitment to supporting papal ministry and expressing institutional solidarity with Rome. By speaking through the SECAM president, African bishops collectively affirm their communion with the Pope and their willingness to mobilize spiritual resources across the continent.
This continental expression of support reflects the importance of papal ministry for the universal Church and the particular reverence with which African Catholics regard the successor of Peter.
The message concludes with prayer for “a full and speedy recovery” enabling Pope Leo XIV to continue his “Petrine ministry in the service of the universal Church.” This prayer affirms that the Pope’s health matters not only personally but institutionally—his recovery is essential for continued papal leadership of the universal Church.
By publicly releasing this message, SECAM invites not only African Catholics but the broader international Catholic community to join in prayer for the Pope. The message’s emphasis on Eucharistic celebrations and personal prayer creates multiple entry points for faithful across Africa to participate in spiritual support.
As Pope Leo XIV undergoes surgery and recovery, he will be supported by prayers and spiritual solidarity from the Church in Africa—representing over 300 million Catholics across the continent. The coordinated prayer effort organized through SECAM demonstrates how the universal Church mobilizes spiritual resources around papal health and ministry.
Cardinal Ambongo assured the Holy Father of continued prayers and “filial solidarity,” positioning the African Church as devoted son of the Church universal, united with Rome in faith, communion, and spiritual commitment.
