The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura–Yambio, Most Rev. Dr. Eduardo Hiboro Kussala, has issued a heartfelt Christmas message to the priests of the diocese, expressing gratitude for their faithful service and encouraging unity, perseverance, and renewed hope amid ongoing challenges in South Sudan.

In his Christmas message titled “A Father’s Christmas,” Bishop Kussala reflected on the humility of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem, drawing parallels between the mystery of the Incarnation and the lived reality of priestly ministry.

“At Bethlehem, God chose not power but humility, not noise but silence, not wealth but love,” the Bishop said, noting that the same spirit is reflected in the quiet and faithful service of priests across the diocese.

Acknowledging the hardships faced during the year, Bishop Kussala recognized the heavy pastoral burdens carried by priests as the country continues to experience social and humanitarian challenges. He praised their steadfast presence among the people, often serving in difficult conditions and without recognition.

“Like the shepherds of Bethlehem, you kept watch through the night,” he wrote. “You remained close to your people and broke the Bread of Life even when your own hearts were tired.”

The Bishop emphasized that Christmas is a reminder of God’s closeness to His people, describing priests as a living sign of Emmanuel—God with us—through their ministry in parishes, chapels, villages, and remote communities.

Calling for renewed unity within the presbyterate, Bishop Kussala urged priests to support and encourage one another, stressing that fraternity and mutual care are essential to effective ministry.

“Our unity is our strength; our fraternity is our silent preaching,” he said.

In his message, the Bishop assured the priests of his continued prayer and pastoral closeness, thanking them for their loyalty to the Church, obedience, perseverance, and love for the people entrusted to them.

He concluded by invoking blessings for the Christmas season, entrusting the priests to the intercession of Mary, Mother of Priests, and Saint Joseph, and praying that the newborn Christ renew their priestly joy and fill their ministry with peace and fruitfulness.

The message was signed and issued from the Bishop’s Office of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura–Yambio on December 24, 2025.
