Sakure, Western Equatoria State — The Catholic Diocese of Tombura–Yambio, in partnership with the Sakure community, has officially launched a large diocesan farmland site, marking a major milestone in the Church’s efforts to promote food security, agricultural development, and economic empowerment.

The launch ceremony, held on 20 December 2025 at St. Teresa Catholic Parish in Sakure, was led by the Most Reverend Dr. Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, Bishop of Tombura–Yambio. The event attracted clergy, traditional leaders, local farmers, youth groups, parishioners, and invited guests from neighboring communities, reflecting broad-based support for the initiative.

The project involves the opening of approximately 10 acres of land designated for crop production. It forms part of the Diocese’s wider strategic plan to enhance self-reliance, strengthen livelihoods, and support integral human development. Sakure Parish is envisioned as a model center for agricultural development within the Diocese.

Addressing parishioners and community members, Bishop Hiiboro encouraged collective ownership of the project and emphasized the value of hard work. He explained that the farmland is intended for both household consumption and commercial production, with proceeds expected to support the Diocese’s social, educational, and pastoral programs.

“Agriculture is not only an economic activity but also a concrete expression of faith, stewardship, and responsibility for the wellbeing of our people,” the Bishop said, urging the community to prepare actively for full implementation of the project in 2026.

An agricultural specialist, Mr. Marcello Constantino, confirmed that the inspected land meets the standards required for large-scale crop production. He pledged to work closely with the Diocese to ensure the project’s success through proper planning, training, and sustainable farming practices.

Community leaders welcomed the initiative with optimism. The local chief, Mr. Louis Tertizio, praised Bishop Hiiboro for his visionary leadership and concern for the welfare of the people, noting that translating agricultural plans into concrete action demonstrates responsible pastoral care.

Parishioners of St. Teresa Catholic Parish also expressed strong support, highlighting the project’s potential to create employment, develop skills—especially among youth—and stimulate local economic activity. Many described the farmland as a future hub for organized farming, training, and collaboration between the Church and the community.

Diocesan and community leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the long-term success of the project, expressing hope that it will benefit both present and future generations while strengthening food security across the region.
