Thousands of Faithful Participated in a Historic Consecration Ceremony as Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio Solemnly entrusted the Town of Rii-Yubu, its people, families, institutions, and future to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, marking a spiritual turning point for one of South Sudan’s most remote and vulnerable regions.
The consecration ceremony featured a solemn procession stretching nearly three kilometers through the streets of Rii-Yubu, known affectionately as Source-Yubu City, culminating at the newly established convent of the Adoration Sisters. The streets became a living testimony of faith, prayer, unity, and hope as Christians publicly entrusted their lives and future to the loving Heart of Christ.
The event carries profound significance given Rii-Yubu’s strategic yet challenging location along the long border between South Sudan and the Central African Republic. The region has endured decades of cross-border insecurity, armed conflict, displacement, and underdevelopment, remaining one of South Sudan’s most remote areas, connected by roads regarded among the most difficult in the country.
A Beacon of Hope on Difficult Terrain
Despite these challenges, the people of Rii-Yubu have demonstrated extraordinary resilience, faith, and determination. The city has become a sanctuary of hope, welcoming refugees fleeing instability in the Central African Republic and internally displaced persons from Tombura and neighboring communities. In a region marked by uncertainty and hardship, Rii-Yubu has remained a beacon of faith and hospitality.
Throughout decades of struggle, the Catholic Church has served as one of the region’s most dependable institutions. Through the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio and its partners, the Church has provided education, healthcare, humanitarian assistance, livelihoods support, peacebuilding programs, pastoral care, and social services to communities that others have found difficult to reach.
Rich Catholic Heritage Spanning a Century
Rii-Yubu possesses a rich and inspiring Catholic heritage centered on two parishes that form the spiritual heart of the community. Ave Maria Parish, founded in 1923, ranks among South Sudan’s oldest Catholic missions and has served the people faithfully for more than a century. St. Thomas Parish, canonically erected in 2011, reflects the Church’s continued growth and vitality in the region. Together, these parishes have nurtured generations of believers and contributed immensely to the spiritual and social transformation of the area.
The city is home to what many consider one of South Sudan’s most beautiful, spacious, and architecturally impressive church buildings. Rising prominently above the landscape, the magnificent structure stands as a symbol of faith, perseverance, and the enduring presence of God among His people. In a place often associated with remoteness and hardship, this remarkable house of worship proclaims a different story: one of hope, beauty, dignity, and unwavering trust in divine providence.
