Rii-Yubu Consecrated to The Sacred Heart of Jesus in Historic Act of Faith at South Sudan’s Frontier

By Sr. Laurencila Akinyi, FSSA.

Thousands of Faithful Participated in a Historic Consecration Ceremony as Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio Solemnly entrusted the Town of Rii-Yubu, its people, families, institutions, and future to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, marking a spiritual turning point for one of South Sudan’s most remote and vulnerable regions.

The consecration ceremony featured a solemn procession stretching nearly three kilometers through the streets of Rii-Yubu, known affectionately as Source-Yubu City, culminating at the newly established convent of the Adoration Sisters. The streets became a living testimony of faith, prayer, unity, and hope as Christians publicly entrusted their lives and future to the loving Heart of Christ.

The event carries profound significance given Rii-Yubu’s strategic yet challenging location along the long border between South Sudan and the Central African Republic. The region has endured decades of cross-border insecurity, armed conflict, displacement, and underdevelopment, remaining one of South Sudan’s most remote areas, connected by roads regarded among the most difficult in the country.

A Beacon of Hope on Difficult Terrain

Despite these challenges, the people of Rii-Yubu have demonstrated extraordinary resilience, faith, and determination. The city has become a sanctuary of hope, welcoming refugees fleeing instability in the Central African Republic and internally displaced persons from Tombura and neighboring communities. In a region marked by uncertainty and hardship, Rii-Yubu has remained a beacon of faith and hospitality.

Throughout decades of struggle, the Catholic Church has served as one of the region’s most dependable institutions. Through the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio and its partners, the Church has provided education, healthcare, humanitarian assistance, livelihoods support, peacebuilding programs, pastoral care, and social services to communities that others have found difficult to reach.

Rich Catholic Heritage Spanning a Century

Rii-Yubu possesses a rich and inspiring Catholic heritage centered on two parishes that form the spiritual heart of the community. Ave Maria Parish, founded in 1923, ranks among South Sudan’s oldest Catholic missions and has served the people faithfully for more than a century. St. Thomas Parish, canonically erected in 2011, reflects the Church’s continued growth and vitality in the region. Together, these parishes have nurtured generations of believers and contributed immensely to the spiritual and social transformation of the area.

The city is home to what many consider one of South Sudan’s most beautiful, spacious, and architecturally impressive church buildings. Rising prominently above the landscape, the magnificent structure stands as a symbol of faith, perseverance, and the enduring presence of God among His people. In a place often associated with remoteness and hardship, this remarkable house of worship proclaims a different story: one of hope, beauty, dignity, and unwavering trust in divine providence.

Spiritual Proclamation and Renewal

The consecration of Source-Yubu City to the Sacred Heart of Jesus represents far more than a religious ceremony. It is a spiritual proclamation that Christ remains present among His people, especially in places marked by hardship and isolation. It is a declaration that no community is forgotten by God and that His love reaches even the most distant frontiers of the world.

This devotion to the Sacred Heart has inspired Catholic communities for generations, particularly in Ireland, the United States, and throughout the universal Church. Families, parishes, schools, dioceses, and entire communities have entrusted themselves to the Sacred Heart as a source of mercy, protection, healing, reconciliation, and hope.

Beginning of a Renewed Chapter

For Rii-Yubu, the consecration marks the beginning of a renewed chapter. It is an act of entrusting the community’s future to Jesus Christ, a prayer for healing from wounds of violence and displacement, and a commitment to strengthen families, promote reconciliation, protect the vulnerable, and inspire a future built on peace, justice, and integral human development.

The newly established convent of the Adoration Sisters stands as a visible sign of this hope. Through their ministry of prayer, Eucharistic adoration, and service, they will help strengthen the spiritual foundations of the community and bring the light of Christ to future generations.

Living Witness of Faith

As Bishop Hiiboro led the faithful in the solemn act of consecration, the event became a powerful witness that faith remains alive and vibrant in Rii-Yubu. The three-kilometer procession was not merely a march through the city but a pilgrimage of hope and a declaration that Christ walks with His people.

Called to Be a Bridge of Peace

Standing at the frontier between nations, Source-Yubu City is called to become more than a border town. The consecration positions it as a bridge of peace, reconciliation, fraternity, and human dignity among peoples and nations. Consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Rii-Yubu now looks toward the future with renewed confidence, trusting that the Heart of Christ will guide, protect, and bless its people for generations to come.

Significance for South Sudan

The consecration of Rii-Yubu holds significance not only for the local community but for South Sudan as a whole. As the nation continues its journey toward lasting peace and development, the witness of Rii-Yubu—a frontier community that has endured decades of hardship yet maintained unwavering faith—offers inspiration and hope.

From its century-old Catholic heritage to its magnificent church standing proudly on South Sudan’s frontier, from its welcoming embrace of refugees and displaced families to its unwavering faith in God, Rii-Yubu stands today as a beacon of hope. Consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Source-Yubu City proclaims to the nation and the world that faith, love, and hope are stronger than distance, hardship, and fear.

As the Adoration Sisters establish their convent and commit to their ministry of prayer and service, the consecration of Rii-Yubu to the Sacred Heart of Jesus marks a spiritual milestone that will continue to inspire and strengthen communities not only in Western Equatoria State but throughout South Sudan for years to come.
