A solemn yet joyful mood filled the Curia residence in Yambio on Tuesday as Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio celebrated 31 years of priesthood. The ceremony brought together clergy, faithful, and community leaders to honor the bishop’s enduring commitment to spiritual leadership and service.

The anniversary event marked more than just a personal milestone it served as a reflection on decades of devotion to the Catholic Church and the people of South Sudan. Speaking to attendees, Bishop Hiiboro expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who have walked with him through the journey.

“I am deeply thankful for everyone who has supported my mission over the years. This journey has been one of faith, challenges, and unwavering service to God and His people,” he said.

Reflecting on his path from seminary life to bishopric, bishop Hiiboro described the values that shaped his vocation. He spoke of the unity and humanity fostered in seminary life, and how those same values continue to guide his service.

“In the seminary, we lived as brothers and sisters. In the priesthood, we work together spiritually, with compassion and forgiveness. We don’t hold grudges; we forgive and move forward,” the bishop remarked.

He added that “I wish our people and leaders could embrace this same spirit of unity and humanity.”

Meanwhile, Fr. Thomas Bagbiowia, the Vicar General, also addressed the gathering, having witnessed Bishop Hiiboro’s ordination in Khartoum 31 years ago, recalled the sacredness of that moment. “We witnessed an ordination done in truth and faith. Bishop Hiiboro has lived up to that calling,” Fr. Bagbiowia said.

The commemoration came at a time when many in South Sudan are yearning for moral leadership, peace, and national reconciliation.

The Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio has remained a key voice in peace building and social development under Bishop Hiiboro’s leadership.

As he marks this milestone, many believe his legacy is not only in his years of service but in the lives, he has touched through his leadership, compassion, and unwavering faith.
