The Catholic Diocese of Tombura–Yambio (CDTY) has announced the creation of a Diocesan Historical and Spiritual Archive to be established in Yambio, aimed at preserving the rich legacy of Bishop Joseph Gasi Abangite and other local figures of holiness.
The announcement was made by Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala during a series of official diocesan declarations delivered on Saturday 13th 2025 at St. Mary Mother of God Parish, during the celebration of the 11th anniversary and 95th birthday of the late Bishop Gasi.
“A Diocesan Historical and Spiritual Archive shall be established in Yambio to preserve the heritage, teachings, and documents of Bishop Gasi and other local figures of holiness,” Bishop Hiiboro declared to the faithful in attendance.
According to bishop Hiiboro, the archive will be more than a storage facility. It will be “a living center of memory and inspiration” — a place where the faithful can encounter the enduring witness of those who shaped the Church in Western Equatoria and beyond.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Diocese to commemorate the life and ministry of Titarani Bishop Joseph Gasi Abangite, who served as a pastor, peacebuilder, and prophet in South Sudan for decades. His moral clarity, courage during times of war, and unwavering commitment to the people have made him a symbol of faith and resilience.
On Saturday, the Diocese also unveiled the official portrait of Bishop Gasi, which will now be used in all diocesan institutions and publications as the approved image of his legacy.
Once completed, the archive will be open to clergy, scholars, seminarians, and lay faithful seeking to study the spiritual and social history of the Diocese. It is expected to collaborate with schools, parishes, and religious communities to integrate the wisdom and witness of past generations into current pastoral and educational efforts.
