In a powerful stride toward strengthening democratic participation and peacebuilding, Anisa FM Radio, a member of the Catholic Radio Network (CRN), with support from Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), held a one-day training on community engagement and freedom of expression.

The event, held at the Anisa FM premises in Yambio, brought together regular callers, civil society representatives, government officials, and radio staff to foster dialogue ahead of South Sudan’s 2026 General Elections.

Fr. Assisi Anand, Director of Anisa FM, opened the training with heartfelt gratitude and a call for unity:

“Good morning to all of us. I’m so grateful to God for this wonderful moment He has given us. Though our radio is currently off-air, this face-to-face gathering is a blessing. We are here as brothers and sisters to share ideas and strengthen our voice for peace and democracy.”

He emphasized the importance of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees freedom of speech and expression, while reminding participants of the responsibility that comes with it.

“Freedom of expression is vital, but it must be exercised with moderation and respect. We cannot speak everything we think—we must follow rules and express ourselves wisely.”

Fr. Assisi also acknowledged the leadership of Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala and expressed hope that Anisa FM would resume broadcasting by the end of the month.

Mr. Isaac Fura, Director General of the State Ministry of Information and Communication in Western Equatoria, served as guest of honor. In his remarks, he praised the initiative and urged participants to seize the opportunity.

“I’m thankful to NPA for supporting this important training. Opportunities like this don’t come often—grab it wholeheartedly. What you learn here will help you contribute meaningfully to our democratic process.”

He commended Anisa FM and CRN for their commitment to civic education and inclusive dialogue, noting that such efforts are essential for peaceful elections and informed citizenry.

The training featured interactive sessions led by Anisa FM staff Baraka John and Mandela, focusing on responsible communication, civic engagement, and media literacy.

Mama Juan, a regular caller known for her passionate contributions to Anisa FM programs, shared her appreciation.

“This training has opened my eyes. I now understand how to express myself better and help others do the same. Thank you Anisa FM and CRN for always giving us a platform.”

Mr. Michael Dakpari, a representative from a local civil society organization, echoed the sentiment:

“CRN and Anisa FM have done a wonderful job. This program is timely and empowering. It brings together voices that matter—community members, leaders, and media—to build peace through dialogue.”

This training marks a significant step in preparing communities for the upcoming elections, reinforcing the role of media and civil society in shaping a peaceful and democratic South Sudan.
