Presiding over the Mass of Sacrament of Confirmation, bishop Hiiboro Kussala, have urged all the faithful of Tombura-Yambio Diocese to pray for a spirit of unity, peace, and the presence of the Holy Spirit among the people of South Sudan, as the country continues to grapple with ongoing instability, during the ongoing commemoration of 11th anniversary of the late Bishop Joseph Gasi Abangite.
Addressing the congregation, Bishop Hiiboro emphasized the urgent need for spiritual intervention, especially at a time when the nation is plagued by intercommunal conflicts, political tensions, rampant killings along highways by armed assailants, and a deteriorating economy that is severely impacting ordinary citizens.
“Let us pray fervently for the Holy Spirit to dwell among us, to transform hearts, and to renew the spirit of brotherhood and peace in our land,” Bishop Hiiboro said. “As we honor the life and legacy of Bishop Joseph Gasi, we are reminded of his tireless efforts for peace and unity. We must continue this mission in prayer and in action.”
South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has struggled with repeated cycles of violence and unrest since gaining independence in 2011. Despite various peace agreements, the country remains deeply divided, with many communities suffering from insecurity, displacement, and poverty.
Bishop Hiiboro encouraged all faithful, to join in prayer for a spiritual awakening and moral renewal, stressing that lasting peace must begin in the hearts of the people.
The late Bishop Joseph Gasi Abangite, remembered for his pastoral leadership and advocacy for peace, remains a symbol of resilience and faith for the Catholic Church and the people of South Sudan. His anniversary celebrations continue to draw hundreds of faithful each year, serving as a moment of reflection, unity, and renewed commitment to the nation’s healing.
