One hundred households of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Tambura County have received emergency food and non-food assistance, in a $10,000 relief intervention funded by the Vatican’s Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan and delivered through Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tambura-Yambio.

The beneficiaries, drawn from the Gamunakpe and St. Mary IDP camps, received their items during a distribution ceremony held on Friday at St. Mary Parish in Tambura. The project was implemented by the Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CODEP) as part of its emergency humanitarian response to communities affected by conflict in the county.

A CODEP team led by Mr. Kumbonyaki Alex Umbagbia arrived in Tambura earlier in the week and briefed county authorities on the scope and objectives of the mission. Speaking at the distribution ceremony, Umbagbia acknowledged that the intervention was made possible through the Vatican Ambassador’s donation and the sustained advocacy of Bishop Hiiboro Kussala on behalf of displaced communities.

Tambura County Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) Coordinator Madam Lucy Edward praised the Bishop’s consistent commitment to vulnerable populations. “We are really happy about the items; they will help our people at this critical moment,” she said.

Beneficiary representatives Anita Gaza and Joseph Paulino welcomed the assistance, noting that the relief would meaningfully ease the hardships faced by displaced families struggling with the effects of ongoing conflict.
Hon. Mathew Mabenge also commended both CODEP and the Bishop for their efforts, describing the intervention as a source of hope for suffering communities. “We hope for even bigger support in the future, but this means a lot to our people,” he said.

CODEP reaffirmed its commitment to continue supporting IDPs and other vulnerable populations in Tambura County under its ongoing humanitarian response programmes.
