Thousands of Christians of Yambio gathered in the heart of Yambio on Sunday 13th 2025, to celebrate Palm Sunday, joining the global Christian community in marking the beginning of Holy Week. The faithful at the Central Deanery of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio (CDTY) participated in a solemn and vibrant procession from Villa football ground to St. Mary Mother of God Parish, St Jude, and St Augustine parish.

With palm branches in hand and hymns filling the air, the procession commemorated Jesus Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, a moment that Christians believe marked the start of His journey to the cross. The event, deeply rooted in biblical tradition, also served as a spiritual call to reflect on humility, peace, and redemption.
Presiding over the celebration, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura, Rt. Rev. Dr. Edward Hiiboro Kussala, delivered a poignant homily urging the faithful to embrace humility and compassion in their daily lives.
“Jesus entered Jerusalem not as a warrior king, but in humility, riding on a donkey,” Bishop Hiiboro said. “As we remember His suffering and sacrifice, let us also walk the path of humility and humanity in our homes, communities, and nation.”

He emphasized the need for unity and empathy, especially in the face of the many challenges affecting the region. “Let Palm Sunday be more than a ceremony,” he added. “Let it be a commitment to walk with one another in peace, justice, and love.”
Palm Sunday, which falls on the Sunday before Easter, commemorates an event documented in all four Gospels, the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem where crowds welcomed Him with palm branches, crying out “Hosanna to the Son of David.” The use of palm branches symbolized victory and peace, and the cry of “Hosanna” meaning “save us” echoed the people’s longing for salvation.
