Seminarians of St. John Paul II Institute Embrace Bishop Hiiboro’s Call for Agricultural Stewardship

By Deacon Tambua Godwill

The seminarians of St. John Paul II Institute of Philosophy Major Seminary in Yambio, together with their rector and assistant administrator, planted 351 coffee seedlings across two fedans of land. The initiative coincided with a generous outpouring of rainfall, a sign many interpreted as both divine blessing and ecological opportunity.

This agricultural endeavor is not an isolated act but part of a growing movement inspired by Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, the shepherd of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio (CDTY). The bishop called on every parish and institution within the diocese to engage meaningfully in farming and sustainable development, following his powerful principle: “Bible in one hand and a hoe in the other.”

Apart from coffee plantation, the seminarians are also involved in various agricultural activities like food staff planation; yams, pineapple, sugarcane, papaya, oranges among other things for sustainability.
